Sustainable Performance
We can help you commission your facilities so that you achieve the performance that was intended, and that your operations staff are prepared to operate your new facility in a sustainable fashion like we have for Saskatchewan Government Services, the City of Saskatoon and the City of Winnipeg.
We can help you optimize building performance in terms of energy usage and Green House Gas (GHG) emission management like we have for SaskTel’s Environmental Initiative Impact Study and GHG Indicator Development and Cameco Saskatoon facilities GHG Baseline Study.
Government Services Commissioning Program
IDI completed a commissioning pilot project for Saskatchewan Government Services in 2004. The project was very successful and IDI has become the preferred commissioning system provider for all Government Services facilities. IDI is currently working on our eleventh project with this high profile partner.

SaskTel Environmental Initiatives Impact Study
Integrated Designs Inc. (IDI) was consulted to help answer the question of how much an environmental mandate cost and paid back.
- IDI evaluated the effectiveness of SaskTel’s adopted environmental initiatives in terms of the triple bottom line: economic, environmental, and social prosperity. As a prosperous corporation, SaskTel was also very interested in the initiatives’ risk management effect.
- The economic impact was largely due to facility retrofits that vastly reduced energy cost. Using its building systems expertise, IDI estimated savings due to reduced pumping power, lowered hot water setpoints, and installation of high-efficiency equipment, as examples. Operational measures, such as conference calling to save traveling cost and recycling to divert waste from the landfill, were also evaluated for their economic benefit.
- The environmental impact analysis involved evaluating recycling measures in terms of natural resources spared, energy measures (in facilities, transportation, and operations) in terms of greenhouse gas emission reduction, and water use initiatives in terms of litres of processed water saved.
- The social impact analysis was best presented qualitatively by defining three major ways that SaskTel has an impact socially.
- To demonstrate the effect of environmental initiatives on risk management, IDI defined and justified the top environmental initiatives that reduced risk incurred by SaskTel. This analysis was well received, and provided insight into how an environmental initiative can affect all aspects of a corporation.
- The successful report was presented to many levels of SaskTel, including the Board Directors, the president of the company, and the provincial legislative assembly. The results of the analysis encouraged SaskTel to continue, or even better, its mandate to improve its impact on the natural and social environment.
City of Saskatoon, Saskatoon, SK
The City of Saskatoon is progressive in its approach to sustainability and environmental commitment. It has partnered with Roadmap 2020 to better manage energy and lower green house gas emissions, and has developed waste & recycling plan, corporate EMS (Environmental Management System), bicycle network plan, pilot water conservation plan and has specified LEED certification for the downtown Transit Terminal.
- IDI has worked with the city to upgrade their BMS control systems and developed a standard graphical interface. Facilities include the Cosmo Civic Centre, Harry Bailey Aquatic Centre, Lakewood Civic Centre, Lawson Civic Centre and the Field House
- IDI has provided energy audits and BMS upgrades including commissioning for Saskatoon Light and Power Electrical Operations Centre, Saskatoon City Hall and Credit Union Centre.
City of Winnipeg Retro-Cx, Winnipeg, MB
The City of Winnipeg required retro-commissioning services in troubleshooting and tuning its underperforming facilities.
IDI retro-commissioned City of Winnipeg’s 1155/1199 Pacific Ave office building, new 9-1-1 Call
Centre, and East Side Police Department. This involved rigorous testing of control systems,
troubleshooting the cause of unmet setpoints using air/hydronic balancing techniques and
equipment, and working with the project contractors in getting the uncovered issues resolved.
- Vastly improved occupant comfort in 1155/1199 Pacific: found that 25% of heating valves
were malfunctioning (no more parkas worn indoors!) and found that damper positions
needed to be adjusted in order for Roof Top cooling equipment to keep up with hot summer
outdoor airflows - Saved owner money by finding the cause of regular pump failures at 1155/1199 Pacific
- Highlighted scheduling issues in the 9-1-1 Call Centre that, if not rectified, would have been
very costly in moving delays - Spotted missing valves, control graphics errors and improperly located sensors that
contributed to incorrect control of heating and ventilation systems in the East Side Police
Department - Saved headaches for the owner in troubleshooting system problems and coordinating fixes
directly with the contractors
