University of Winnipeg Axworthy Health and Recplex
The University of Winnipeg’s Health Recplex is a welcoming soccer and recreational facility in the heart of Winnipeg. The University website states “We believe that everyone regardless of socio-economic status should have access to safe places to play, grow and belong.” The design of the building reflects this thought. Natural light floods the space and small windows along the sides of the building allow access to views both into and out of the space. Along with a field that accommodates a FIFA-sized soccer pitch there is a community gym with a rock climbing wall, retractable batting cages, a multi-purpose room, yoga/dance studio and underground parking. IDI. provided input on sustainable practices in both the design and construction phases. The U of W’s Facility Staff worked along side IDI’s Commissioning agents to ensure the building systems were commissioned and running at optimum conditions.
Project Highlights
-
The UWHRP is targeting LEED Gold and the design has achieved Power Smart status with Manitoba Hydro.
-
More than 90 percent of the regularly occupied spaces have access to views to the outside.
-
A high albedo roof reduces the heat island effect in the middle of downtown Winnipeg, and the energy efficient mechanical design allows for the building to achieve an energy savings of 50% when compared to the 1997 MNECB reference building.
